Helen

Loft District · Birmingham

Also listed in: Over 50 Birmingham

Helen opened in August 2020 in a two-story 1920s-era shotgun-style building on 2nd Avenue North. Chef Rob McDaniel and his wife Emily McDaniel own it; the venue calls it a contemporary Southern grill cooked over hardwood coals and smoke, named for Rob's grandmother. The site says Helen has been recognized by Esquire, the MICHELIN Guide and the James Beard Foundation since opening, and that in 2025 both Helen and its sister Bayonet were recognized by Michelin, with Bayonet receiving the Bib Gourmand. Lunch runs Tuesday to Friday with a daily special, the bar opens at 4 and dinner valet starts at 4:30.
