The Bright Star opened in 1907 as a 12-seat bar in Bessemer and moved in 1915 to the Realty Building, where it still serves; the tile floors and hand-painted murals in the original dining room have been renovated and remain. Greek immigrant Tom Bonduris founded it, and his cousins Peter and Bill Koikos bought an interest in 1925, starting the Koikos family's long stewardship. The kitchen served meat-and-three lunches to coal, iron ore and steel workers, and today the menu runs to steaks, seafood and Southern dishes with Greek touches; Southern Living singles out the fried snapper throats, which began as a staff meal. It has grown from 12 seats to five dining rooms seating up to 330, and Bham Now calls it a James Beard Award-winning institution and the oldest family-owned restaurant in Alabama.
