Irondale Cafe
The Irondale Cafe began in 1928 as a hot dog stand run by Emmett Montgomery, according to the City of Irondale. Maggie Prentice added hamburgers, barbecue and sandwiches, and in 1932 Bess Fortenberry bought it and renamed it the Irondale Cafe. Her niece, author Fannie Flagg, based the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe on the place, and the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau says the first batch of fried green tomatoes was served here. The film's 1992 premiere drew Flagg, and the city says the cafe fried 60 to 70 pounds of green tomatoes on weekdays at the time.
