Big Spoon Creamery began as a driveway pop-up in July 2014, after Ryan and Geri-Martha O'Hara met in 2010 while working for James Beard Award winning chef Frank Stitt. It grew into an ice cream cart, then a truck, then this first shop in MAKEbhm in Avondale, now with a second room in Homewood and one in Huntsville. Bham Now reports the Washington Post named it one of the seven most travel-worthy ice cream shops in the United States in August 2026, and that Tasting Table named it the best in Alabama in June 2026. The shop says it makes its ice cream by hand with local and seasonal ingredients and uses it to help its community.
